The article looks at three central points of discussion to do with the importance of technology in productive and business development in Latina America and the Caribbean. In the first section, the author attempts to sketch where Latin America and the Caribbean stand in terms of technological development and competitiveness in relation to other of the world´s developed and developing regions. The second section briefly highlights the features of the newly emergent world economic order, in an attempt to place the region in the present international context and proposing a number relevant suggestions for its development. In the third part, the author suggests some policies aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of the region´s companies within the framework of CEPAL´s recent proposals for “productive development with social equality”. The article winds up with a brief reference to the practices of the OCDE countries in this areas.El documento gira en torno a tres ejes de la reflexión sobre el tema de la importancia de la tecnología para el desarrollo productivo y empresarial de América Latina y el Caribe. En la primera parte, el autor intenta bosquejar la posición relativa de América Latina y el Caribe, en materia de desarrollo tecnológico y competitividad internacional, con respecto a otras regiones del mundo tanto desarrolladas como en vías de desarrollo. En la segunda parte, se destaca brevemente las características del nuevo ordenamiento económico mundial emergente, de tal manera de ubicar a la región en el contexto internacional actual e inferir algunas reflexiones relevantes para su desarrollo. En la tercera parte, se sugieren algunas políticas orientadas a reforzar la competitividad sistémica de las empresas de los países de la región en el marco de los nuevos planteamientos de la CEPAL sobre “la transformación productiva con equidad social”. El documento concluye haciendo una breve referencia a las prácticas de los países de la OCDE en este campo.
