The restlessness of the human and his position in front of other living beings were always present in many of the western philosophical currents. Today, the legal debate on the dignity, morality, sensitivity and even personality of these beings is in force in many countries that seek to modify and create laws, such as Law 17/2021 in Spain, which by changing the legal status of animals to “sentient beings” achieves that protection is extended to them, establishing new responsibilities and duties. This article comments on this legislative change and explores the possibility of attributing rights to animals.La inquietud del hombre y su posición frente a otros seres vivos estuvieron siempre presentes en muchas de las corrientes filosóficas occidentales. Hoy, el debate jurídico sobre la dignidad, la moralidad, la sensibilidad e, incluso, la personalidad de estos seres se encuentra vigente en muchos países que buscan modificar y crear leyes, como la Ley 17/2021 en España, que al cambiar el estatus jurídico de los animales a “seres sintientes” logra que se amplíe la protección hacia éstos, estableciendo nuevas responsabilidades y deberes. Este artículo comenta sobre este cambio legislativo y explora la posibilidad de atribución de derechos a los animales.
