The article is a tribute to late judge Antonio CASSESE that studies one of his final papers on the role of jus cogens norms in International Law, published posthumously in 2012. In order to do this, the author tries to prove, using CASSESE’s views and analyzing the latest decisions of different international tribunals, that the essential aim of enhancing the role of peremptory norms is not an impossible one. Apart from this, this article examines not only with the notion of fragmentation of International Law, but also with the solutions that imperative norms could bring to normative conflicts in International Law. Last but not least, the author offers a perspective on the risks that could be derived from the misuse of the concept of jus cogens norms in order to justify every decision of a tribunal without a solid argumentation.El artículo representa un homenaje al juez Antonio CASSESE, a partir del análisis de una de sus últimas investigaciones sobre el rol de las normas de jus cogens en Derecho Internacional, publicada tan sólo unos meses después de su fallecimiento. Para ello se intenta probar, mediante la utilización de los argumentos esgrimidos por CASSESE y un análisis de la jurisprudencia de distintos tribunales internacionales, que el fin último del fortalecimiento de las normas imperativas no resulta tan lejano. Por otro lado, se analiza la noción de fragmentación del Derecho Internacional, y el modo en que las normas perentorias pueden llegar a ofrecer soluciones a partir del establecimiento de una jerarquía en el sistema normativo internacional. Finalmente, se abordan los riesgos a los que está sometido el futuro de las normas de jus cogens, a partir de una tendencia de ciertos tribunales a utilizarlas como elemento discursivo apto para justificar cualquier decisión
